Whenever you are looking for a way to increase the traffic to your site by way of search engines you should never underestimate the power of backlinks. These are links that are on other sites that link back to your website.
To see the importance of these backlinks, you must first know how a search engine works. It sends out little crawlers that search around the internet for new sites and old sites. When it finds these sites it gives them a ranking.
These crawlers also check all the links on pages and goes to those sites. So the more times a crawler gets taken back to the same site, the higher ranking that site is going to get. That’s why it’s important to get out there and get as many links as you can.
Backlinks are easy to use and a great way to get your site noticed. The best way to go about backlinking with people is to join a link exchange. This is where you can exchange links with someone, and they will put your link on their site if you put their link on your site. However stay away from link farms. These pages with countless or unrelevant link to other websites were created during the fervor of link popularity and will hurt your ranking more than anything.
The way that a backlink works is like a vote. Every site that has a link to your website on it is voting for you to have a higher ranking. Thus, the more votes you get, the higher your ranking is. It’s very easy to see how this backlinking thing works.
The next thing you have to know is not only can backlinking help you, but it can hurt you as well. Just because a website has your link on it does not mean that it helps you out every time. It’s only good if the site that you have your link on is related somehow to your website. Getting your link posted on a site that has nothing to do with your site is not going to help you.
In fact, it will count against you. So if you have a site about cars, and you get it posted on a food web page, then it’s not going to do you any good. Knowing when and where to get your website posted is a hard thing to understand. However, as you do it more and more you will get used to it, and soon you will have the power of backlinking working for you.
